How to train a sheep – Start with halter training
Understanding your sheep’s emotional state
The most important part of sheep training is understanding the behavior of the animal you are working with. Training is the process of building a shared language, and to succeed, you need to understand what your sheep is communicating through its behavior.
That is why the first section of my Sheep Training online course focuses entirely on understanding sheep behavior during training sessions. You will learn how to interpret different behaviors and how to help your sheep better understand the task you are asking it to perform.
Learning is always more difficult for a fearful sheep. For this reason, training goes hand in hand with influencing the sheep’s emotional state. When you can guide your sheep from fear toward curiosity and confidence, learning becomes much easier and faster.
The first section of the course includes many examples of different sheep and their behavior during training. It is often much easier to learn by watching real-life examples while someone explains what the sheep is communicating and why.

Sheep training techniques
Once you understand sheep body language and behavior, you can begin practicing training techniques.
By using rewards with good timing, you encourage your sheep to enjoy working with you and to keep trying, even when she does not succeed immediately. However, before you begin any training session, you need a clear plan. If neither you nor your sheep understands what is supposed to happen, success becomes much less likely.
In my online course, I have gathered the simplest and most effective training techniques for teaching everyday handling skills. Everything starts with halter training.
As your training skills improve and you become better at understanding your sheep’s emotional state, you can begin adjusting your training according to the situation. It is important to know when to make a task easier and when to make it more challenging.
Sheep training step-by-step
A common mistake is expecting a sheep to perform a large new behavior immediately, without realizing that the task should first be broken down into several smaller exercises practiced over multiple days.
For example, teaching a sheep to stand tied includes many separate training steps:
1. Wearing a halter without fear.
2. Accepting the lead rope being attached to the halter.
3. Learning to yield to pressure while being guided by a person.
4. Standing at a handling station while practicing pressure and release.
5. Being tied while a person remains nearby.
6. Standing calmly and independently at the handling station.

I am a professional animal trainer and have spent years filming and training sheep. Based on everything I have learned, I have created a clear and practical online course suitable for both beginners and those with some previous experience.
Sheep halter training
If I had to recommend just one place for a beginner to start, it would be halter training.
This simple but incredibly important skill creates a strong foundation for all future training. Through halter training, you can begin building a relationship based on understanding, communication, and trust.
